A Case Study on Comparison of Male and Female Vowel Formants by Native Speakers of Korean

چکیده
Compared to the amount of research on Korean consonants, few studies indeed have been done to analyze Korean vowels. In addition, the results of recent studies are mixed. This study was conducted for reviewing the Korean vowel system. In this study, we measured the formant frequencies of eight Korean vowels by three Seoul dialect female speakers of Korean in their early 30s, and compared the results with those of two Korean males in their early 30s. We confirmed overlapped /e, /, /u, o/ and /a, / formant frequencies uttered by female speakers, this was also the result of male speakers. These findings were similar to the results in the previous studies. Additionally vowel spaces of males have corresponded to the results indicated in previous studies. However the vowel spaces of females were different from the results of previous studies.

An acoustical study of Korean monophthongs produced by male and female speakers.
(Received 21 August 1990; accepted for publication 29 November 1991) The first three formants of the ten Korean monophthongs were studied. The vowels were produced by 20 male and female speakers in an |hVd A | (V = vowel) context. Then the malefemale variations in the Korean formant data were examined. The uniform scaling method resulted in less than a 6% difference between the scaled and refer...
متن کاملA study on the production-perception link of English vowels produced by native and non-native speakers
This study explored the relationship between the production of the nine English vowels and the perception of synthesized vowels by thirty-five American, Chinese, and Korean, male and female speakers. The average formant values of the ten American English speakers were employed to synthesize the nine vowels that were presented to the thirty-five speakers. The center formant values of the highest...
متن کاملHow different are the monophthongs of Malay speakers of Malaysian and Singapore English?
Early works on Singapore and Malaysian English used to consider them as a single homogeneous entity based on their shared history as previous British colonies. However, since 1965, both Malaysia and Singapore have been independent from each other. It is interesting to investigate, some four decades post-independence, how different the English speech patterns of Malaysians and Singaporeans have ...
متن کاملProduction of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners
This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...
متن کاملThe effects of the acoustic properties of second language vowel production on pronunciation evaluation
This study examines the acoustic characteristics which native speakers use as cues when judging speech samples. 17 words produced by 98 (15 native speakers and 83 Japanese learners of English) were collected and evaluated. Following this, the first three formants for each vowel produced were measured and used as independent variables in stepwise multiple regression analyses to explain variance ...
